JKUAT Cougars Streak Extends: Is Kenya Cup Promotion Fast Approaching?

JKUAT Cougars Streak Extends: Is Kenya Cup Promotion Fast Approaching?

Nairobi, Kenya – The JKUAT Cougars are no longer just "contenders" in the KRU Championship; they are the undisputed pace-setters. Following a clinical 33-23 victory over Mwamba RFC last weekend, the Cougars have extended their unbeaten run to seven matches, sitting firmly at the top of the 2025/26 KRU Championship standings.

Unbeaten and Unstoppable: The Cougars’ Rise

The win against "Kulabu" wasn't just another notch on the belt; it was a statement. By taking down a former Kenya Cup mainstay like Mwamba, JKUAT proved they have the tactical maturity to compete at the highest level of Kenyan rugby.

With 34 points currently to their name, the Cougars hold a narrow but significant three-point lead over rivals Catholic Monks and Mwamba. For the Juja-based side, the goal is no longer just making the playoffs; it’s about securing a home semi-final at the "Pit."

Tactical Discipline Under Coach Smith Muhoya

The transformation of the squad this season can be attributed to the disciplined approach of head coach Smith Muhoya. Speaking on the team's momentum, Muhoya emphasized that while the streak is impressive, the job is far from over.

"Our target is to qualify for the Kenya Cup next season. To do that, we must maintain this tempo. We have three games left, and we are treating each like a final to ensure we host the semi-finals right here in Juja."

Remaining KRU Championship Fixtures

To maintain their pole position, the Cougars must navigate a challenging final stretch of the regular season:

  • Away vs. Kisii Rugby: A tough trip to Mosocho where the atmosphere is always hostile.

  • Home vs. Western Bulls: A chance to defend the fortress against the Echulusi.

  • Away vs. USIU-A Martials: A local derby that could decide the final seeding.

Why a Home Semi-Final is the Game Changer

In the KRU Championship, home-ground advantage is statistically the biggest factor in winning promotion. The JKUAT "Pit" has become a graveyard for visiting teams this season, largely thanks to the vocal Juja and JKUAT student fans  who turn out in droves.

Securing a top-two finish ensures that the winner-takes-all semi-final happens in Juja. Winning that semi-final is the golden ticket that would see JKUAT promoted to the Kenya Cup, the top tier of rugby in the country.
